First Vice President Dmitri Medvedev asked Putin to head the cabinet if he were elected president in March 2008.

After hard negotiations with other political organizations, United Russia announced Medvedev’s candidacy on behalf of the governing party and the allied forces.

By proposing Putin to be his prime minister, Medvedev increases his possibilities to win the elections, because those who voted for the incumbent president in the recent parliamentary elections will support him at the polls, analysts said.

Kremlin Deputy Press Chief Dmitri Peskov refused to comment on eventual modifications in the prime minister’s faculties after the elections.

According to Peskov, it is a hypothesis and if it materializes, Putin will work harmonically with Medvedev from the ethical viewpoint, he stressed.

For the time being, Russian experts are speculating about the future political configuration of the country based on the results of the elections.

A couple of months ago, Putin himself did not exclude the possibility of heading the government if the right, efficient, capable and modern president were elected.

On the other hand, he ruled out a reduction in the executive’s prerogatives, although many people like the idea of a “strong head of government and a weakened president.”
