Bangkok : Energy Minister Piyasvasti Amaranand said here today that the state-run Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) should seriously consider investing in hydroelectric power in India and Bhutan, especially the latter which has a lot of potential.
Bhutan has vast water resources and the water in that country flows from a pipe at the height of about one kilometer while in Thailand it is only a few hundred metres, Mr. Piyasvasti said.
Technically speaking, Bhutan has the potential to produce as much as 150,000 megawatts of hydroelectricity, he said.
"In future, electrical distribution grids in Myanmar, India and Bhutan will be linked," Mr. Piyavasti said. "It's worth investing in the project because there's no need to sell electricity to Thailand as it could be sold to India which still demands a lot of electricity for its use," Mr. Piyasvasti said.
The Energy Ministry still has several projects to follow-up during the second half of 2007, he said, expressing confidence that electricity and petrochemical production would be significant to drive local economy.
