Abandoned bag delays flights at German airport

Dusseldorf (Germany) : Part of Dusseldorf Airport, one of Germany's busiest hubs, was closed for two hours Saturday as bomb-disposal teams took apart an abandoned bag which had raised suspicions when wires and a battery-powered torch were detected inside.

Authorities said seven departures were delayed and four more flights had to depart via alternative gates.

The bag was left near the baggage-inspection zone of the departure level at Terminal C, an airport spokeswoman said. She said the contents, along with food, suggested it may have been an electrically detonated bomb.

German federal police specialists used high-pressure water jets to tear the bag open and established that it was harmless and there was no bomb inside. Police said they could not initially establish who owned the bag.
