New signing Younes Kaboul had already left the field injured before Keane's flicked finish over the goalkeeper from close range gave Spurs the lead with five minutes of the first half remaining, writes the English Premier League website reporting on Saturday's pre-season matches involving Premiership teams.

The Chiefs responded soon after the interval when former Charlton Athletic striker Shaun Bartlett headed home well, but Bulgarian Berbatov made sure of the win just after the hour mark thanks to good work from new strike partner Darren Bent.

Bent, another ex-Charlton forward, sped clear of his marker and unselfishly squared for Berbatov to tap in when seemingly well placed to shoot himself.

Big-spending Sunderland were stunned 1-0 by Championship new boys Scunthorpe at Glanford Park.

New five million pound striker Michael Chopra started for Sunderland, as did fellow recent arrival Dickson Etuhu, but Kieran Richardson did not feature for manager Roy Keane's men.

Scunthorpe took the lead in only the second minute when Nyron Nosworthy's poor attempted pass ricocheted off an opponent and dropped at the feet of Martin Paterson, who fired past goalkeeper Darren Ward.

Sunderland struggled to get back into the game, with Greg Halford's close-range header straight at Joe Murphy the best they could muster in the opening half.

Although Daryl Murphy hit the outside of a post in the second period, it was Scunthorpe who continued to look the more dangerous and they held on for a morale-boosting win.

A late goal from Nolberto Solano saved Newcastle United's blushes in a 1-1 draw at Carlisle.

Sam Allardyce was without Michael Owen for the pre-season friendly at Brunton Park after the England striker suffered a minor thigh injury in training this week.

But new signings David Rozehnal, Joey Barton and Geremi all featured in a strong Newcastle team.

It was the League One side, however, who took the lead after a goalless first half, as Danny Livesey headed past the stranded Steve Harper from a 56th-minute corner.

But in the final minute Solano collected the ball from a flick-on and crashed past Kieran Westwood in goal to level.

Rolando Bianchi scored twice as Manchester City rounded off their tour of Sweden with a comfortable 4-0 hammering of Carlstad United.

The 8.8-million pound Italian set up his countryman and strike partner Bernardo Corradi to round the goalkeeper and open the scoring after five minutes.

With 20 minutes on the clock the roles were reversed, allowing Bianchi to drive home for City's second.

Sven-Goran Eriksson's men wasted little time in making it three after the break as Bianchi swept home for his third in two games in his manager's homeland.

Substitute goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel had to save a penalty after Micah Richards' handball before another replacement, Marc Laird, struck a fourth from the edge of the box.
