Peruvian Congress elects new president

Lima : Peruvian ruling party deputy Luis Gonzales-Posada has been elected as the new president of the congress for the 2007-08 session.

Gonzales-Posada Thursday became the second consecutive lawmaker from the Peru Aprist Party to have won the post.

Outgoing President Mercedes Cabanillas said that Gonzalez-Posada had won 66 votes, defeating opposition candidate Luis Bedoya who won 49. There were four blank votes.

Union for Peru Party deputy Aldo Estrada, Future Alliance member Martha Moyano and Democratic Parliamentary Group deputy Carlos Torres were elected deputy presidents of congress.

Cabanillas immediately swore-in the president and wished him luck.

Gonzalez-Posada, 62, is a lawyer and former leader of the Peru Aprist Party. He represents the southern province of Ica and led the Foreign Affairs Commission in the legislature from 2006 to 2007.

He was first elected deputy in 2001, and re-elected in 2006. In 2004, he was appointed special representative to the Kingdom of Morocco.
