"Although there has been no official communication so far, we have received reports that Gujjars propose to hold a Mahapanchyat (large-scale meeting) in Meerut Wednesday," Uttar Pradesh Principal Home Secretary K. Chandramauli told media persons here Sunday evening.

"We have directed the district administration to take necessary measures to ensure that the gathering does not turn violent."

The agitation in Rajasthan, which took a violent turn Tuesday, had also spilled over into this neighbouring state Saturday, with a group of protesters removing a part of the railway tracks and disrupting train services between New Delhi and Lucknow.

However, there were no reports of any violence in Uttar Pradesh Sunday and the official described the situation as "well under control".

Chandramauli, however, added: "We have alerted the concerned district magistrates and district police chiefs to maintain a round-the-clock vigil in areas where train services were disrupted."
