Gujjars withdraw stir, peace formula announced

Jaipur : Leaders of the Gujjar community in Rajasthan withdrew their week-old violent agitation Monday after Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje announced the establishment of a committee to examine the Gujjar demand for tribal status.

The committee, which is to be headed by a high court judge with a mandate to look into all aspects of Gujjars' demands, will submit its recommendations in three months.

In response, Gujjar leader Colonel Kirorilal Bainsla announced withdrawal of the agitation that began last Tuesday and has claimed about 25 lives, including several policemen.
