As many as 130 UN member-countries have already co-sponsored the resolution which will be introduced by Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma in the UN General Assembly in New York Friday.

"We are confident that the resolution will be adopted," official sources said here.

The idea to get the UN recognition for Mahatma Gandhi's unique philosophy of non-violent resistance was first discussed at the Satyagraha conference, titled 'Peace, Non-Violence and Empowerment', organised by the Congress party early this year.

Speaking at the conference, Congress president Sonia Gandhi had called for steps to get the Mahatma's birthday marked as the International Day of Non-Violence.
