Nairobi : The Kenyan government will from next year meet the cost of tuition in all public secondary schools, President Mwai Kibaki announced in his Labour Day speech.
Speaking at a rally at Uhuru (Freedom) Park in Nairobi, he said the government would provide 4.3 billion shillings (one USD = about 68 shillings) for the programme.
President Kibaki said the government would also review the cost of running secondary schools.
Parents will, however, be required to meet other costs.
The president at the same time said the government was committed to improving the welfare of workers in the country.
He appealed to the Confederation of Trade Unions (COTU) and Federation of Kenya Employers to work closely with the government to generate necessary economic growth to create employment for the youth.
