New Delhi: There are 27,518 madrassas in the country but apparently none in Jammu and Kashmir according to information given by the state government, the Lok Sabha was informed Tuesday.
In a written reply, Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari said that, according to the state government, there were 86 private schools being run by the State Wakf Board.
The highest number of madrassas is in Left-ruled Kerala and Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Madhya Pradesh with about 6,000 each followed by Uttar Pradesh (4,292) and Bihar (4,102).
Modern subjects like science, mathematics and English, are only for those Madrasas that voluntarily accept them under the centrally sponsored scheme.
