The blasts occurred in the busy central market of Golghar. According to the latest report there were blasts at Baldev Plaza, Punjab Hotel, and Jalkal Building. There is no report of any death but at least four people are reported to be injured.

The blasts occurred within 500 metres of each other. The first bomb went off at around 1840 hrs (IST) and was followed by other two in gap of five minutes.

Initial reports indicate the bombs were planted in gunny bags on bicycle parked in the market area.

When asked who could be held responsible for the blasts Aggarwal said, “Its too early to point to anyone. We are busy trying to avert any further possible explosion.”

The areas have been cordoned off. A high security alert has been sounded in all of Eastern UP.

Gorapkhpur has a history of violence and communal unrest.

In January 2007, communal tension erupted in Gorakhpur on the eve of the Muharram. BJP MP Yogi Adityanath was arrested on charges of inciting communal violence.

Gorakhpur blasts follow bomb blast in Hyderabad’s Mecca Masjid where one bomb killed 10 people and two other bombs failed to go off.
