Chennai : Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK party Saturday decided to nominate Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's daughter M.K. Kanimozhi as a party candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections in the state next month.
Of the six seats in the upper house of parliament from the state falling vacant, DMK is expected to win two on the basis of its strength in the assembly.
A meeting of the DMK administrative committee here late Saturday announced Tiruchy N. Siva as its second nominee.
Kanimozhi, 39, is tipped to be inducted in the union cabinet as a minister of state, likely with the commerce portfolio, according to party sources here.
Siva, a former MP, is known to be a staunch supporter of M.K. Stalin, Karunanidhi's son being groomed to succeed him as chief minister and party chief.
With the nomination of Kanimozhi and Tiruchy Siva to parliament, the Karunanidhi family is consolidating Stalin's position in the state.
While the opposition AIADMK is likely to win two seats and the Congress one, the DMK is expected to support the candidature of Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D. Raja for the remaining vacancy.
The Congress has nominated its spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan and state unit president M. Krishnaswamy.
