Chennai : Tamil Nadu state youth Congress president Mayura S. Jayakumar, and two others were attacked by unidentified assailants at the Congress headquarters, Sathyamurthi Bhavan, here Sunday.
Party sources said a gang of nearly 10 people, wielding sickles and knives, barged into Jayakumar’s office located on the first floor of the building and attacked him. Jayakumar suffered injuries on his right shoulder and was taken to a hospital.
Another youth Congress leader Rajamanickkam and Jayakumar’s assistant Srinivasan were also injured in the attack.
Police later identified a Congressman from ward number 132, Williams as the leader of the gang that attacked Jayakumar.
A meeting of Congress MLAs to discuss the Oct 29 attack on state party president M. Krishnasamy in Ramanathapuram district and a function to mark the 90th birth anniversary of Congress leader Maragatham Chandrasekar were being held in the building when the attack took place.
Union minister E.V.K.S. Elangovan had attended the function but had left the venue just before the attack took place.
