Kolkata, Nov 11(IANS) Two prime suspects of the 2001 massacre in West Midnapore’s Chhota Angaria were remanded in 14-day judicial custody by a West Bengal court Sunday, a day after being detained by the police.
The accused, Tapan Ghosh and Sukur Ali, were evading arrest and were wanted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the killings of seven Trinamul Congress supporters in Chhoto Angaria on Jan 4, 2001.
Ghosh and Ali were among the 13 Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) supporters who were nabbed Saturday evening and produced before Contai Court Sunday.
The 13 were arrested from Egra in East Midnapore while fleeing in an ambulance and three cars carrying three injured Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) members in Nandigram, whom they had abducted, the police said.
Ghosh, a CPI-M West Midnapore district committee member, and Ali were intercepted by local residents and handed over to the police.
Sisir Adhikary, a Trinamul Congress legislator from Egra, alleged that one of the intercepted cars belonged to the Khejuri Panchayat Committee, controlled by the CPI-M, and bore a state government sticker.
A CBI team will go to Egra Monday to seek the court’s permission to interrogate the duo.
