Bhubaneswar : Orissa alerted the collectors of its coastal districts as a cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal intensified Tuesday.
The severe cyclonic storm formed Monday over the southeast Bay of Bengal had moved in the north-westerly direction and intensified Tuesday into a very severe cyclonic storm, a met official told IANS here.
It lay centred at about 850 km south-southeast of Paradeep in Orissa Tuesday afternoon, he said, adding that the system was likely to intensify further and move in the north-north-westerly direction.
Distant warning signal number two (DW-II) has been kept hoisted at Paradeep and Gopalpur ports in the state, he said.
“We have alerted all collectors of coastal districts remain alert although the storm is far away from the state,” an official of the state relief commissioner’s office said.
A super-cyclone had hit the Orissa coast in 1999, killing more than 10,000 people.
