As the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists – identified as Mirza Rashid Beg of Sialkot, Mohammad Abid of Lahore and Yusuf alias Faisal of Multan – were being brought into the court premises, infuriated lawyers there started attacking them.

The lawyers were stopped by the timely intervention of the police, aided by some senior lawyers. But the drama lasted for more than four hours.

Lawyers, shouting slogans against Pakistan and President Pervez Musharraf, almost laid a siege to the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Bal Mukund, before whom the three militants were produced.

While the police did not seek their remand, the court sent the trio to jail till Nov 30.

The terrorists were intercepted early Friday in a grey Hyundai Santro car from the outskirts of the city with a huge cache of lethal weapons and explosives, including two AK-47 assault rifles with 120 rounds of ammunition, three imported pistols, four kg RDX with five detonators and 16 grenades.

Indian currency amounting to Rs.24,300 was also recovered from their possession.

Earlier in the day, private news TV channels aired video clips of the three terrorists’ “confession” in which they were shown claiming they had definite plans of targeting newly appointed Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi.
