28 killed in Saudi gas plant blaze

Riyadh : At least 28 people working for Saudi Aramco gas plant in eastern Saudi Arabia were killed in a blaze caused by a leak in a gas pipeline, the company said in a statement Sunday.

The leak took place during the maintenance work on the pipeline. Details on the number of injured or their nationalities have not yet been disclosed.

The blaze at the plant, 30 km from the Hawya gas complex in the eastern province, broke out after midnight.

The plant produces an estimated 310,000 barrels of liquefied gas per day. The company employs many foreigners.
