A public interest litigation(PIL) filed by a temple architect Mukesh Chauhan to seek permission to start construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya. The land for construction was where Babri Masjid stood till it was destroyed by Hindutva mobs.

The bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justices R.V. Raveendran and J.M. Panchal dismissed the petition. “There was a disputed structure and at this stage we cannot direct the construction to anyone. The present prayer cannot be allowed,” Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan said to Mr. Chauhan who represented the case in front of the bench.

The bench cited court cases and fear of law and order as the reason for dismissal of the petition.
