Austrian National News Agency (APA) quoted Vice Chairman of the Socialist Group at EP Hannes Swoboda as saying France was not expected to make a serious contribution to improving the social situation in Europe after Sarkozy’s speech.

He said the French president totally ignored the ability of reaching a “social Europe” and did not mention the issue at all in his speech, adding that Sarkozy did not have anything new to add either.

However, Swoboda welcomed Sarkozy’s criticism of capitalism, saying everyone had to wait to see whether his agenda for the EP in 2009 would act in accordance with his criticism or not.
