Gujarat to invest in 1,300 MW plant in Chhattisgarh

Raipur : The Chhattisgarh government has agreed in principle to a proposal by the Gujarat government for a joint venture to set up a 1,300 MW coal fired power unit in the state, official sources said Saturday.

C.J. Jose, chairman and managing director of the state-owned Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) called on Chief Minister Raman Singh here late Friday and submitted the proposal.

“The chief minister has agreed in principle to a joint venture with the Gujarat government to set up a 1,300 MW thermal power plant in the state’s northern region which has nearly 18 percent of the country’s coal deposits,” sources in Chhattisgarh State Electricity Board (CSEB) told IANS Saturday.

The sources added that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the joint venture would be signed soon.

Chhattisgarh presently generates 1,405 MW of power including 1,280 MW from thermal plants and 125 MW from hydroelectric power plants.

Chhattisgarh plans to become India’s power hub by the year 2011 with an additional generation capacity of 12,000 MW as several public and private institutions have been lining up for large-scale investments in the power sector.
