New Delhi : More than 380 million telephone subscribers, who do not want to receive telemarketing calls or SMS messages, have registered with the National Do Not Call Registry (NDNC), the telecom market regulator said Tuesday.

On Jun 5, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) introduced a mechanism to curb unwarranted telemarketing calls under the Telecom Unsolicited Commercial Communications Regulations, 2007.

It directed telemarketers to register with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), and said no service operator could provide telecom services to unregistered telemarketing companies.

“The telecom service providers have been asked to revisit the cases of rejection as such telemarketers may indulge in unauthorised and unverified calls outside the regulatory framework,” TRAI said in a statement.

“However, there are a number of applicants who have not tried to register themselves again as their original request was incomplete. Some of these telemarketers may be calling even those people who are registered on the NDNC because such telemarketers do not have access to NDNC for verification of numbers,” it added.

TRAI has also asked telecom operators to be stricter and more vigilant in handling any complaints by the consumer on the issue.
