Thiruvananthapuram : Thiruvananthapuram-based Southern Air command of the Indian Air force (IAF) will conduct an air exercise – Dakshin Prahar – Dec 3-9 aimed to activate the air defence assets deployed and carry out a functional assessment of its defence network in the region.
The multi-role exercise would include state of the art fighter aircraft such as Mirage-2000, Su-30s and Jaguars while the associated logistical support would be provided by IL-76s, AN-32s and Mi-8 helicopters. Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) have also been included in the exercise, said a statement released here Wednesday.
The exercise will also witness coordination between the IAF and the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to jointly share the airspace so that the smooth flow of air traffic is maintained.
This is for the first time that coordination of civil-military traffic for simultaneous air activity is taking place at such a large scale.
The exercise would be conducted in two phases. In the first phase, the southern part of the peninsula from Bangalore to Kanyakumari, Lakshdweep and Minicoy Island group would be activated.
The second phase would see activity in the northern part of the peninsula from Hyderabad to Nagpur.
