Veteran Marxist leader dies in Tripura

Agartala : Veteran Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, Dinesh Debbarma, died at the government medical college here following a protracted illness, family sources said Thursday.

Debbarma was the founder of the Tripura Rajya Upajati Ganamukti Parishad, an organisation of tribal people of the CPI-M.

During his 62 years of political career, the octogenarian leader had spent nearly three years in jail and more than six years underground.

The tribal leader had been a member of Tripura Legislative Assembly for 15 years since 1978 and had been a minister of the Left Front government till 1983.

Party leaders and people from all walks of life including Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Public Works Department Minister Badal Choudhury, state party secretary Baidyanath Majumder, paid their last respects to the departed leader.

He was 88 and is survived by four sons and a daughter. His wife predeceased him.
