“The government of Indonesia and the UN are working together closely to engage the authority of Myanmar to change into a peaceful, stable and democratic nation,” Gambari told a press conference after meeting Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda.

He thanked the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), China and other countries for their efforts to calm the situation in Myanmar.

“The UN is also intensifying support so that ASEAN can play more important roles in solving the issue, especially before the meeting which will be held in Singapore on Nov. 19-20,” Gambari said.

Hassan said Gambari’s recent visit to Myanmar and trips to other ASEAN member countries were very important because they help ASEAN better engage in resolving the issue.

Gambari is on a six-nation Asian tour to help resolve the Myanmar problem. He will meet Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono later Thursday to convey UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message. He will visit Myanmar again in November.
