Speaking at a press conference Monday, Jordanian government spokesperson Nasser Judeh said Jordan hopes that this conference would lead to the establishment of an independent, viable Palestinian state on the Palestinian territories.

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said at a cabinet meeting that the upcoming peace conference, which is likely to be held at Annapolis, Maryland in the US in late November or December, would “not be a historic breakthrough”.

Voicing Jordan’s rejection of Olmert’s remarks, Judeh stressed that his country’s stance “has always been expressed by His Majesty King Abdullah II and this was clear during his recent meeting in London with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.”

In July, US President George W. Bush proposed to hold the international conference this autumn to include Israel, the Palestinians and some Arab nations to help revive the stalled Mideast peace talks.

Last week, Rice visited the Middle East for the latest round of shuttle diplomacy as Israeli and Palestinian negotiators are still at odds over an outline of a peace agreement that would be presented at the conference.
