Port St Lucie (US) : Daniel Chopra, the Swede of Indian origin who has secured his full playing rights for the 2008 PGA Tour, primed himself up for a good finish to the current season as he shot a six-under 67 to tie for third place at the Ginn Sur Mer Classic at Tesoro.
Chopra, a former Asian Tour regular who learnt his early golf at the Delhi Golf Club, carded a bogey-free 67 Thursday on the par-73 course.
American Bob Estes took the clubhouse lead with a flawless 64. He birdied six straight holes, still only the second best in his career, during the nine-under par round that left him tied for the lead with Tommy Armour III.
Chopra started with a birdie on tenth and added two more on 16th and 18th. On the back nine, he birdied the second, third and fourth settling for par on the rest for a 66.
South Korea’s Kevin Na shot a 68 to be joint fifth, while Charlie Wi was three under after 16 holes in tied 18th position before play was suspended due to darkness.
Australia’s Andrew Buckle posted a 72 to tie for 45th place while compatriot Jarrod Lyle was even par for the day after 14 holes to be tied for the 64th spot.
Play was suspended early because of darkness with 22 players yet to finish. Armour just about finished with a 10-footer for a birdie-birdie-birdie finish, and was 9 under after one round for the first time.
Craig Kanada was with Chopra three shots off Estes’ pace at 67.
