Chandigarh : Punjab Police have been unable to interrogate former director general of police (DGP) S.S. Virk even once since his arrest on Sunday on charges of corruption and harbouring of terrorists.

Virk, who was arrested in New Delhi, is being treated at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here after doctors on Monday found his blood pressure to be high and suffering from accelerated hypertension.

On Tuesday, a court in Mohali town remanded Virk in judicial custody for 15 days.

It directed prison officials from Patiala jail to take custody of Virk at PGIMER itself.

The court asked vigilance officials of Punjab Police to move a fresh application seeking police remand of the DGP to interrogate him. The application can be moved after Virk is discharged from PGIMER, it said.

Virk has been accused of amassing disproportionate assets worth nearly Rs.1 billion (Rs.100 crore).

After Virk was brought from Delhi, he was kept at a police station in Mohali town, 10 km from here, Sunday before being sent to the government civil hospital for medical examination.

He was referred to PGIMER and a team of specialists there put him under observation.

Questions are being raised on the way Virk was arrested without informing the Maharashtra government – where he is a serving DGP rank officer – and the central government.

Doubts are also being raised about the fairness of the vigilance probe against him as some of the officers have benefited from plots of land sold by Virk.
