The suicide bomber blew up his explosive-laden car into the checkpoint near the town of Hibhib at about 10:30 a.m. (0630 GMT), killing a civilian who was in the car with the suicide bomber, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The soldiers at the checkpoint spread and took shelter immediately after they saw the car bomb passing the front concrete barriers quickly, reducing their casualty to two wounded soldiers only, the source said.

Diyala province, which stretches from Baghdad to the Iranian border to the east, has long been the hotbed of insurgency and sectarian violence since the U.S.-led invasion broke out in 2003.
