The long-awaited promotion to Gandhi came as the communists and the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) remained locked in a row over the Indo-US nuclear deal casting a shadow on the government.

Making the announcement at the Congress headquarters here, a party official said that Gandhi, who represents Amethi in the Lok Sabha, would oversee the work of the Youth Congress and the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the campus arm of the Congress.

He was among the general secretaries and other party officials named in a long-awaited organisation reshuffle.
