Bangalore : Karnataka Wednesday announced a Rs.200,000 cash prize for hockey players from the state who were part of the team that recently won the Asia Cup – within hours of their threatening to stage a protest over only cricketers being rewarded for their achievements.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting, an official spokesman said.
The move came after Indian hockey coach Joaquim Caravalho’s statement earlier in the day that four players would sit in protest soon in front of state Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy’s office to draw his attention to the “step-motherly” attitude towards hockey players and sportsperson from other disciplines.
Caravalho was peeved that state governments were vying with each other to announce cash prizes for cricketers from their states following the Indian team winning the inaugural Twenty20 World Championship.
