Delhi MP says she was fired at, police say no

New Delhi, Sep 27 (IANS) A day after Congress MP Krishna Tirath reported that two motorcycle-borne men opened fire at her car near the Jhandewalan Metro Station here, the police Thursday said she was not attacked at all.

“There are no signs of an attack on her car. We have not found any bullet marks on the car after inspecting it minutely. Reports from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) have also suggested the same,” Joint Commissioner of Police (New Delhi range) Ajay Kashyap said.

“She (Tirath) was not attacked at all. The rear window of the Santro car may have cracked if hit by pebbles,” Kashyap told IANS.

He added that the police were still looking into the case.

However, Tirath, who represents the capital’s Karol Bagh constituency, rebuffed police claims that she was not attacked.

“It seems that the police don’t want to investigate the case, but I am cent percent sure that someone had fired bullets at my car from behind,” Tirath told IANS.

“How can they deny they have not found any bullet marks on the car when pictures of the car clearly show a bullet hole,” asked Tirath.

The Congress MP also denied the police claim that her car windowpane could have been damaged by pebbles. “If they think stones hit my car, then give me the names of those who threw them and arrest the assailants.”

Tirath said she would take the issue to the home ministry and Delhi Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal.

Late Wednesday Tirath reported to the police that she heard the rear windowpane of her Santro car crack close to the Hanuman statue near the Jhandewalan Metro Station.

Tirath was sitting in the front seat of her car with her husband at the wheel. The alleged attack took place around 8.15 p.m. when they were on their way to Inderpuri in west Delhi to attend a religious function.

Her personal security guard was sitting behind them.

She told the police that a motorcycle was following their vehicle for sometime. When she heard the windowpane crack, she told her husband not to stop and they drove on for about one-and-a-half kilometres before stopping and reporting the matter to the police.

A case was registered at the Mandir Marg police station.

She lives in Harishchandra Mathur Lane in Connaught Place.
