Earthquake Jolts Aceh Again

Bandarlampung : Another earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale was reported to have jolted Simeuleu district town of Sinabang in Aceh at 3.29am on Saturday after the similar occurrence on Friday, Antara news agency reported.

According to Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) report, the epicenter of the quake was located at 2.90 degrees northern latitude and 95.29 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of one kilometer under the sea, or some 127 kilometres northwest of Sinabang.

But there was no immediate report of casualties or damages in the Saturday morning’s earthquake.

At noon on Friday, an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale shook Sinabang town in Simeulue district, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam province, BMG reported.

The quake’s epicenter was located at 2.56 degrees northern latitude and 95.85 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 30 Km below sea level, around 57 km northwest of Sinabang.

And at at 7:27am on Friday, a tectonic earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale shook western coastal areas of Aceh Province.

The first quake’s epicenter was located at 2.9 degrees northern latitude and 95.28 degrees eastern longitude, around 128 km northwest of Sinabang, Simeulue District, at a depth of 72 km below sea level, Syahnan, head of the Mata Ie geophysics office, said here on Friday.

The earthquake could be felt at the second level of Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) and lasted for around 10 minutes.

Last March 30 and 31, 2008, Aceh was hit by two consecutive earthquakes measuring 5.0 and 6.2 on the Richter scale respectively.

The earthquakes did not trigger any subsequent tsunami.

In addition to Aceh Province, North Maluku Province was also hit by an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale on Friday (April 4) at 4.41 am WIB.
