Washington : US commander in Iraq David Petraeus Tuesday began his two-day testimony in the Congress on the situation in Iraq, together with Ryan Crocker, US envoy to Iraq.
In the opening statement of the testimony, Senator Carl Levin of Michigan, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, pointed out that the recent surge in violence in Iraq has “raised questions” about the Bush administration’s war policy.
It is widely expected that Petraeus will present his case to the lawmakers for suspending further US troop withdrawals from Iraq beyond the planned pullout of five combat brigades by the end of July.
He will also meet the three presidential hopefuls, John McCain of Arizona, Barrack Obama of Illinois and Hillary Clinton of New York, who will question him in the process.
