New Delhi : Fissures appeared in the nine-year-old National Democratic Alliance (NDA) with the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) summoning its parliamentary party meeting Tuesday to review its alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after differences over seat sharing in Karnataka.
The JD-U is upset with the BJP after its futile attempts to secure from the BJP a respectable quota of seats in Karantaka, which goes to the assembly polls next month.
JD-U general secretary and spokesman Shambhu Srivastava, who along with Karnataka JD-U chief B. Somasekhar has held two rounds of talks with BJP leaders so far, admitted: “The negotiations are deadlocked. No talks took place today.”
“But I may wait in Bangalore for a couple of days more till we take any other decision,” Srivastava told IANS.
“The BJP has already declared its candidates for 173 seats. Now only 51 seats are left. The scope of any electoral understanding with the BJP is receding even as they are going ahead with declaring their candidates for all the 224 assembly seats,” he said.
JD-U president Sharad Yadav April 11 announced the summoning of the parliamentary party meeting to take stock of the alliance. “The parliamentary party will decide on the date of the national executive, which in turn will review the question of alliances,” Yadav said.
Karnataka is to go to the elections in three phases – May 10 (89 assembly segments), May 16 (66) and May 22 (69).
