Berlin : Germany is to expand its civil projects in Afghanistan and the training of Afghan police and army, German Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung announced here Thursday following his meeting with UN’s special envoy on Afghanistan, Kai Eide.
The funding of civilian projects will be raised this year from 80 to 140 million euros.
Germany plans to allocate a total of 900 million euros for Afghan civilian rebuilding efforts by 2010.
Berlin is also to increase the number of police instructors from presently 30 to 45.
The German army is also to triple the number of military trainers for the Afghan army.
There are currently 110 German military instructors based in the war-stricken country.
Meanwhile, Eide met also with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier earlier in the day.
The UN official stressed after his talks with Steinmeier that the radical Taliban militia was not advancing in Afghanistan.
Steinmeier warned against “failing” in the war-ravaged country.
Eide who also met with Chancellor Angela Merkel, voiced great hope for getting a long-term political commitment from western donor states in Afghanistan at the international Afghan conference, scheduled to be held in Paris in July.
