New Delhi : The Himalayan state of Bhutan will adopt a Constitution when its new Parliament session begins next month, as part of the democratisation process. “The first sitting of the Bhutanese Parliament, scheduled to begin in early May, will adopt the Constitution,” news agency Press Trust of India reported Thursday from capital Thimpu, quoting a Cabinet office release. “The Parliament will enact the Election Bill and the Parliamentary Entitlements Bill,” the Cabinet office said. “This was decided at the first Cabinet meeting of the new government last Monday,” the release added. The final draft of the Constitution was prepared last year. The drafting of the Constitution was announced by Bhutan’s former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck in 2001.
“After the adoption, the Constitution will provide the legal framework for a democratic political system that will safeguard the security and sovereignty of the nation and ensure the wellbeing of the people,” the Cabinet release said. The first Parliamentary polls in Bhutan were held last month. The new government will take charge shortly.
