Dhaka : Bangladesh’s caretaker government has scrapped the Gram Sarkar, an un-elected rural administrative system introduced by the Khaleda Zia government in 2003, that had become controversial.
A high court ruling and a committee that went into its working recommended the closure, saying it had been “politicised”.
The council of advisers to the interim government at its weekly meeting Sunday, with chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed in the chair, approved the Gram Sarkar (Annulment) Ordinance 2008 to abolish the system.
Originally conceived by late President Ziaur Rahman and revived by his window Khaleda Zia, it came into being through a bill passed in parliament in 2003, New Age newspaper said Monday.
The government said the annulment was in line with a high court bench verdict that declared the 2003 Act to be illegal. The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld the verdict after the then authorities challenged the high court judgement.
