In an interview with The New York Times, published on Saturday, he had criticized the US conduct of war in Afghanistan.

Gunfire broke out at a military ceremony in Kabul attended by Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

Security forces whisked Karzai away from the scene and hundreds of people fled as shots rang out.

The parade was a celebration to mark the fall of Kabul to the hands of the US-backed militia in 1992.

Live TV showed President Karzai standing on a huge stage surrounded by a crowd of MPs, cabinet members, military commanders and foreign diplomats.

Automatic weapons were fired into the crowd and two MPs were seen to be wounded.

Live TV coverage of the event was cut off shortly afterwards.
