The ceremony was organized Sunday to mark the 16th anniversary of the defeat of the Soviet troops in Afghanistan.

It was not clear where the shots came from or who the target was. However, the president and the dignitaries attending the ceremony took cover and the presidential guards rushed Karzai from the venue.

A similar incident happened at the Ghazni Stadium last year when the Afghan president, along with MPs and mujahideen leaders, was attending a crowded ceremony.

Later, it was revealed that security personnel had fired shots in the air to disperse people who had come from far-off areas to attend the ceremony and who had started a protest outside for not getting space inside the stadium.
