Sana’a : President Ali Abdullah Saleh issued on Sunday the republican decree No. 7 for 2008 calling for the election of the Mayor of Sana’a and governors nationwide on May 17.
The decree called on electoral staff in the capital, districts’ local councils and governorates’ local councils throughout Yemen to make the necessary preparation for the election.
The decree also authorises the Ministry of Local Administration is to name locations of elections a day before the elections process.
Meanwhile, the Country Director of National Democratic Institute for International Affairs in Yemen (NDI ) Peter Dimitroff said that boycotting the governors elections process reflects the boycotters failure on the democratic competition.
He said during his meeting with the minister of local administration Abdul-Qadir Hilal that the governors elected by the members of local councils strengthen the councils role in managing the local affairs.
He highlighted the preparations for the elections of capital mayor and governors, saying the arrangements are fit with the international standards.
Dimitroff voiced the institution’s readiness to present the technical assistances and support to achieve the progress of governors election, considering this election as a progressive and important step on the road of enhancing democracy.
Hilal discussed with the international expert the cooperation aspects between NDI and the ministry such as training the supervisor committees on elections.
