Tehran : The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council hailed on Tuesday the results of talks with a Russian government official as positive and constructive.
Saeed Jalili met with Valentin Sobolev, who serves as the acting head of Russia’s Security Council and leads a delegation on security consultations regarding a range of issues, including Iran’s nuclear program and the situation in the Middle East.
“We had positive and constructive talks with our Russian friends, including my counterpart Mr. Sobolev,” Jalili said, adding that the Russian official would meet with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday.
Jalili said that in the current situation, when the world is moving towards a multi-polar geopolitical system, cooperation between Russia and Iran could ensure global stability.
The Iranian official said peaceful nuclear cooperation with Russia had good prospects and that Sobolev had discussed the issue with Gholam Reza Aghazadeh, Iran’s vice president, who heads the national Atomic Energy Organization.
When asked whether the talks touched upon the seizure on the Azerbaijani-Iranian border of equipment en route to the Bushehr nuclear power plant, which Russia is building in south Iran, Jalili said the issue had not been raised.
A column of vehicles carrying heat insulators for the Bushehr plant was stopped at the border between Azerbaijan and Iran in late March.
Azerbaijani authorities said they needed additional information from Russia over the cargo in view of UN Security Council sanctions against Iran.
Iran is currently under three sets of UN sanctions over its uranium program. The latest resolution against Iran froze accounts of certain Iranian companies and banks, and introduced inspections for goods leaving and entering the Islamic Republic.
Western powers have long suspected Iran of using the program as a cover for making a nuclear weapon. Tehran has denied the allegations, saying it needs the program for peaceful power generation.
The Russian delegation is expected to finish its visit to Iran on April 30.
