One killed in firing during engagement ceremony

Ghaziabad : One person was killed and another seriously injured in indiscriminate firing that took place to celebrate an engagement ceremony in Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.

The incident occurred Monday night in Nand Gram locality under Sihani Gate police station of Ghaziabad. Senior politicians including MP Surendra Prakash Goel, former MP D.P. Yadav and lawmaker Sunil Sharma were present at the time of the incident.

According to family sources, the engagement ceremony was being celebrated at the residence of Ravendra Kaushik, a trader.

Around 11.30 p.m. the supporters of a politician started firing in the air. The supporters of another politician also started firing from their weapons including .315 caliber rifles, pistols and 12-bore guns. Soon a competition started about who could fire more and over 100 shots were fired.

During the firing, two people sustained gunshot injuries. One person was identified as Brijesh Giri who was rushed to the local Yashoda hospital from where he was referred to the Narendra Mohan Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The other person was identified as Babloo Sharma who was rushed to the local Shivam Hospital where his condition is said to be critical.

The police learnt about the incident Tuesday morning when Rekha Devi, wife of Brijesh Giri who was killed, lodged a complaint at Sihani Gate police station. She stated that her husband died in accidental firing and did not name anyone.
