Luxembourg : The European Union is debating an agreement of association and collaboration with Serbia on Tuesday, faced with Belgian and Dutch insistent positions demanding Belgrade’s cooperation with an international court.
We are working hard to sign an agreement today, stated Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, whose country is presiding over the European Union this six month period.
Attending the council of 27 EU foreign ministers, Rupel appeared sure of giving a strong positive sign to Serbian parties in favor of a rapprochement with the bloc, faced with the parliamentarian elections on May 11 in that country.
Only Belgium and Holland retain the prior EU demands that Belgrade shows clear cooperation with the International Criminal Court for former Yugoslavia, which tries war criminals of the fratricidal conflict in that extinct Balkan State.
EU Foreign Policy and Common Security representative Javier Solana considered that it will be possible to overcome difficulties in order to sign the mentioned agreement.
The regional bloc hopes to present arguments favoring the Democratic Party of Serbian President Boris Tadic, whose popularity decreased after his ambiguous position v/v Kosovo’s declaration of unilateral independence.
Contrary to Tadic’s position in favor of rapprochement, Serbian interim Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunika spoke against signing an agreement with the EU if that bloc insists on sending a political and civil mission to Kosovo.
Such contradictory positions put paid to the government coalition of the parties led by each of them, Kostunica’s resignation, and the call to advance elections.
