Bhopal : Hundreds of activists of the Congress-affiliated National Students Union of India (NSUI) were baton charged by the police here Saturday as they were proceeding towards the Madhya Pradesh chief minister’s residence to submit a memorandum demanding elections in colleges.
At least four dozen NSUI workers and a dozen policemen were injured.
Later, a delegation of Congress leaders led by state unit president Suresh Pachouri submitted a memorandum to Governor Balram Jakhar demanding a judicial inquiry into the incident and action against the police officials responsible for ordering the baton charge.
They said the students were holding a peaceful procession when they were beaten up by the police.
“We will not tolerate the dictatorial and anti-students attitude of the government and will again come on streets if our demands were not fulfilled,” NSUI state president Rashmi Pawar said.
