Israeli troops entered the city from more than one place and tens of military vehicles deployed on the streets, the residents said.

The Israeli soldiers broke into houses and arrested five residents, including Majeda Fedda, 35, a member of the Nablus municipal council, the sources said.

Two others were arrested at Hawara checkpoint near the city, security sources added.

Israel conducts arrests in the occupied West Bank almost on a daily basis although the Palestinian National Authority security forces are in charge of several towns there.

Palestinian security forces were deployed in Nablus in last November under an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian government aimed to restore order and security there.

In Nablus, where Israel launched a crackdown against Hamas civil infrastructure, the arrests are of bigger scale and mostly target people affiliated with Hamas.

On Tuesday, Israel released a female Hamas lawmaker from Nablus after holding her for a few weeks.
