New Delhi : India is likely to amend its anti-corruption law making it compulsory to secure sanction before prosecuting any retired government official.
The union cabinet headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday gave its clearance to introduce the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill, 1988, in the monsoon session of parliament.
Changes in the Prevention of Corruption Act will make it compulsory to secure government sanction for prosecuting any retired government officials and would protect them from harassment, Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters after the cabinet meeting.
Sibal said the bill would seek to give protection to retired government servants, as many of them were prosecuted without any sanction.
“Many retired government servants are harassed and many of them do not have resources to defend themselves,” Sibal said.
But if prosecution is sanctioned against the retired government official, their property could be confiscated.
