Dubai : A new expansion project of the holy mosque in Makkah will be completed before the Islamic month of Ramadan and the new area will be able to accommodate 50,000 more worshippers.
Muhammad Nasir Al-Khuzayyam, assistant chief of the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques, said the northern part of the holy mosque would be included in the open courtyard surrounding the Ka’bah, the state-run Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
“The construction company said the project will be completed before Ramadan and the Shamia sector will become the part of the holy mosque. Ninety-nine percent of the work has since been completed,” the report quoted Al-Khuzayyam as saying.
He said the area around the Ka’bah, the cuboidal building considered as Islam’s holiest place, is 70,000 square metres and it would accommodate 50,000 worshippers.
This would facilitate ease and comfort for the estimated three million Umrah performers and worshippers expected this year, particularly in the last 10 days of Ramadan.
