Iranian, Algerian presidents open new chapter in ties – Iranian FM

Tehran : A new chapter has opened in Iran-Algeria relations by an initiative made by the presidents of the two countries, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said.

In a meeting with the his Algerian counterpart Mourad Medelci Sunday, Mottaki said that Tehran and Algiers should remove obstacles on the way of promoting bilateral ties.

Medelci is in Iran as a member of a high-ranking political and economic delegation headed by Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

Bouteflika arrived in Iran on Sunday for a two-day visit which is taking place upon an invitation of his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Mottaki said that Iran and Algeria are cooperating in various fields including housing, power plant construction, petrochemical projects, cement factory, pharmaceutical industry and foodstuff production.

The Algerian minister said that Tehran-Algiers relations were progressing.

Medelci appreciated activities of the Iranian experts for developing the Algerian banking system, industries and housing.
