Beirut : The Lebanese Future Movement (also known as March 14 Alliance) has announced a seven-point proposal on relations with Syria to coincide with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman’s visit to the eastern neighbour.
The proposal defines “the necessary framework for” establishing sound and normal ties with Syria, the alliance said in a press release here Wednesday.
The alliance demands that Syria should refrain from having any military links with Lebanese groups; it should work sincerely with Lebanon to remove bases of Palestinian militant groups in Lebanon; the governments of Lebanon and Syria should prevent use of their territories as launching points for attempts to destabilize each other; they should start legal steps to demarcate the border lines particularly in the Sheba’a Farms area (south Lebanon); and they should accelerate opening embassies in each other’s country in line with relevant international laws.
The alliance also demand that they should account for the missing Lebanese and those detained in Syrian prisons; and they have to review the agreement on fraternity, cooperation and coordination as well as the tasks of the Higher Lebanese-Syrian Council.
The statement voiced hope that Suleiman’s visit would “be a success and open a new bright chapter in the bilateral ties.”
The Future Movement is a Sunni anti-Syria political alliance led by Saad Hariri, son of the assassinated former Prime Minister of Lebanon, Rafik Hariri. It won a majority of the parliament seats in the May 2005 elections.
