Bush calls Gilani, renews strong commitment to US-Pak cooperation

Washington : President George W Bush on Thursday renewed United States’ firm commitment to economic and anti-terrorism cooperation with Pakistan during a telephonic call to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and expressed sympathies over recent terrorist bombings that have claimed scores of innocent lives, the White House said.

“President Bush expressed to Prime Minister Gilani the United States’ strong commitment to working with the prime minister and the government of Pakistan to address the ongoing battle against extremists and to assist Pakistan through its current economic situation,” White House Spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

“The president expressed his sympathies to the people of Pakistan for the recent terrorist attacks that have killed so many innocents,” Johndroe added.

The US president and the Pakistani prime minister “reaffirmed their mutual support for going after these extremists that are a threat to both Pakistan, the United States and the entire world, he stated

The spokesman said Bush also spoke to former president Musharraf and thanked him for his efforts in the democratic transition of Pakistan as well as the fight against al-Qaeda and extremist groups.
